Justin L. Mann (justin.mann@northwestern.edu he/him) is an Assistant Professor of English and African American studies at Northwestern University. His current research project, Breaking the World: Black Insecurity After the New World Order, analyzes an archive of black speculative fiction by authors including Octavia E. Butler, Colson Whitehead, and N.K. Jemisin to explain how black speculation unmakes the worldly project of securitization. Reading literature and policy together, Breaking the World argues that Black speculation constitutes an essential archive for understanding how black people situate themselves in relationship to a security state that simultaneously mobilizes them as the ultimate threat to safety and uses them as frontline soldiers in its neoimperial project. His work has appeared in MELUS, Feminist Studies, Feminist Theory, and Surveillance and Society, and on the websites avidly.com and syndicate.com.
